Eager beaver colleague joins video call 6 minutes early

First impressions matter, and there’s nothing more important than being first on a video call.

ADELAIDE – New starter Timothy Peterson has been at PingusCorp for a week and few people can deny his infectious personality. In the first few days this corporate go-getter has made quite a mark by being first at his desk, the last to leave and always asks irrelevant questions in meetings.

Monday mornings mean that it’s Weekly Meeting time and a chance to align projects and to ensure things are running smoothly. Most staff know how this runs: it kicks off at 9:30am, the Sales team runs through the numbers, the manager calls out the big wins and then the floor opens asking if anyone has questions, although no one ever does.

Now it seems that the exuberant Mr. Peterson is trying to make an impression. He’s already called out that the Excel sheet in the meeting invite is outdated and has added all the meeting attendees on LinkedIn.

Hey new guy, what are you doing?

At 9:24am, a solid six minutes before the call starts Mr. Peterson has joined, with that blue window of horror proudly announcing to everyone on the invite that he’s locked and loaded.

When 9:30am strikes and people reluctantly join he’s asking everyone how they are and if they had a good weekend. At the end of the relatively uneventful meeting when the manager tells everyone to enjoy their week he chimes in and thanks her, and wishes his team mates the same. Little does he know that because of this his colleagues will never invite him to a Friday lunch or coffee from downstairs.
